Right ,I made a lot of mistakes on SSC CGL exam — let me just tell you what they were.

I took this exam twice. First time I walked in blind — random books, random YouTube videos, zero plan. What I'm writing here is what I wish someone had told me before attempt one. If you're also looking for the SSC CGL syllabus 2026 — Tier 1 and Tier 2 both — that's all covered below too.

What Even Is This SSC CGL Exam?

Overview of SSC CGL

SSC CGL is a government exam that hires college graduates for central government jobs. Clear it and you get posted as Income Tax Inspector, Auditor, Accountant, CBI Sub-Inspector something like that. Real government jobs. Not state level, Not contract, Permanent.

Pay is decent Job doesn't vanish in a recession. No 12-hour shifts at some startup that folds in two years. That's the trade.

Eligibility and Age Limit

Any graduate can apply, Age required is 18 to 32 for most posts.

Notification comes around March on https://ssc.gov.in every year. Only check that site Everything else is noise.

Tier 1 vs Tier 2 — Understand This First

Most people get this backwards.

Role of Tier 1

Tier 1 is a filter. 100 questions, 60 minutes, just clear the cutoff. Your score here changes nothing about your rank or your post. It only decides if you move forward.

Importance of Tier 2

Tier 2 decides everything. Rank, post, city — all of it.

How Scores Affect Rank & Post

I've seen guys smash Tier 1 and then coast through Tier 2. They got nothing. Also seen guys barely pass Tier 1, go all in on Tier 2, get ASO in Delhi. Fight where it counts.

Tier 1 — Four Sections

Tier 1 have Four sections. 25 questions each. Two marks per right answer, half mark cut per wrong.

Reasoning

Just practice. Analogies, coding-decoding, blood relations, seating arrangements, number series, syllogism. Do 40 to 50 questions every morning. Keep at it. A month later you'll be moving twice as fast.

General Awareness

Half school GK — history, geography, polity, science. The other half is whatever was in the news for the last six months. Every year, four or five questions come directly from recent news.

A lot of people skip current affairs. Come exam day they're staring at four questions with zero answers. Read a newspaper every morning. Twenty minutes max. Jot down anything worth remembering. Look at those notes on weekends and that's genuinely all you need to do.

Quantitative Aptitude

More candidates struggle here than anywhere else. Percentages, profit-loss, time-work, pipes and cisterns, geometry, trig, algebra, coordinate geometry, DI. Out of all of that, geometry and trig are where the marks are hiding — 12 to 15 questions every paper. Two full months I gave to just geometry. Triangles, circles, everything. Boring as anything. Zero regrets.

English Comprehension:

RC, error spotting, fill in the blanks, cloze test, synonyms, antonyms, idioms, one-word substitution. Good at English? Free marks. Not good? Read daily — anything. Speed and vocab come with time.

Tier 2 — Now It Gets Serious (SSC CGL Syllabus 2026)

Paper 1

150 questions, 450 marks. Three marks right, one mark gone for each wrong answer.

I saw people drop 35 marks in one paper from blind guessing. Anything you're not sure about — leave it. Zero for a blank, minus one for wrong. That gap adds up fast.

So Paper 1 is split into five sections. Math and Reasoning get 30 questions each — that's where your calculation skills and logical thinking really get tested. English has the most questions at 45, so your language game needs to be strong.

General Awareness is 25 questions covering pretty much everything under the sun. And then there's Computer Knowledge with 20 questions — sounds easy but don't sleep on it, those marks add up quick.

DEST Typing Test:

Then there's DEST on top of that, a typing test where you need 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. It doesn't add marks but you have to clear it. Slow typist? Ten minutes of practice daily sorts it out.

Paper 2 (JSO Only)

Statistics — mean, median, mode, probability, regression, sampling. Not going for JSO? Ignore Paper 2 completely.

What Tier 2 Actually Tests

Math — Deeper than Tier 1. Multi-step problems. Complex data. They want to see if you get the concept or just memorized steps. Memorized steps fall apart under harder questions.

Reasoning — Same topics, harder. Matrix problems, more analytical questions, tighter time.

English — Longer passages, trickier grammar. Comprehension texts now come from economics papers and science journals. Simple passages are gone.

General Awareness — Much wider than Tier 1. World history, international economics, environment, full year current affairs, government reports and schemes.han content likho...

Computer Knowledge is 20 questions worth 60 marks. Hardware, software, MS Office, internet, basic networking — nothing deep. Give it two weeks of actual focus and you'll walk into that section without any stress.

How I Prepared SSC CGL Exam ?

Stopped piling up books. Three solid ones, one per main subject, and every previous year paper I could get. That was it.

I learned the concept before the shortcut. Every formula — I made sure I understood why it works. SSC tweaks questions just enough to trip up people who memorized patterns. Know the concept and a new version of the same question isn't a problem.

Previous year papers every single day. Eight to ten full papers, timed. After each one I didn't just check the score. I sat with each wrong answer. Why wrong? Didn't know the concept? Rushed the calculation? Switched a right answer? Every mistake had a reason. Fixed each one.

Sunday mocks every week. Phone down, no breaks, same schedule as the real exam. Followed by three hours of review. Where did time run out? Which answers were guesses? What kept going wrong? That review was more useful than the mock.

Current affairs — twenty minutes every morning with coffee. Short notes on my phone. Weekend review. By exam day six months of news was just sitting there, no cramming needed.

English vocab was my weak area. Hit it first, not at the end. Two months of word lists and reading. By exam day it wasn't a problem.

Topics That Come Up Most

Based on papers from the last five years,

High-Scoring Math Topics: 8 to 10 questions per paper. Trig 5 to 6. Algebra 4 to 5. DI 4 to 5. Strong in these four and you're carrying 25 to 30 marks.

Reasoning: Analogy, coding-decoding, seating arrangement, blood relations. Just those four topics cover 12 to 15 questions every paper.

English: Cloze test, error spotting, reading comprehension, one-word substitution. Start prep here.

General Awareness: History, current affairs, polity, science basics. Nail these four and everything else is extra.

Last Thing about SSC ?

Thousands of regular people clear this exam every year. No special ability. Just daily work and not giving up.

Which post should I go for?

Honestly depends on you. Income Tax Inspector means you're out in the field a lot — raids, surveys, office visits. ASO is mostly sitting in a ministry in Delhi pushing files. Pay is decent either way. Pick whichever day sounds less miserable to you — that's genuinely the best way to decide.

Is there negative marking?

Big yes in Tier 2. One full mark gone per wrong answer. I've seen people lose 30-plus marks in a single paper from guessing carelessly. Skip what you don't know. Come back to it at the end if you have time left. A blank is free. A wrong answer isn't.

How many hours a day?

Five or six hours of real work daily. Phone away, no distractions. Ten hours of half-focused sitting won't move the needle. Lock in that routine for 8 to 10 months and you're in a completely different position than where you started.

Which books?

Rakesh Yadav or R.S. Aggarwal for Math. BS Sijwali for Reasoning. SP Bakshi for English. Lucent's for GK. That's the standard list and it works. But previous year papers will teach you more than any of those books — start solving them from day one, not month nine.

How hard is it to clear?

Lakhs register every cycle. Most of them show up without a real plan — no paper practice, no tracking weak areas, no consistency. If you actually study properly every day for 8 to 10 months and use previous year papers throughout, you're already ahead of most people in that list. It's not about being the brightest. Never was.

Where do I get the official syllabus PDF?

ssc.gov.in — that's it. When the 2026 notification goes live, open the CGL 2026 PDF directly from the site. Syllabus is attached inside as an annexure. Save it somewhere you won't lose it. Third-party syllabus PDFs from coaching sites go outdated fast and often have errors.
